Moscow Yiddish Center was started in 1999 as a grassroots project under the patronage of Moscow Hillel, a Jewish student organization.This project is designed for young people, primarily students who are interested in Yiddish language, culture and history. It is led by student volunteers, who are enthusiasts of the Yiddish language. As the project developed, it received grants from various donors. Among them there were Aaron and Sonia Fishman Foundation for Jewish Culture, Jewish Community Development Fund (American Jewish World Service), Hillel Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, as well as private donors.
Our major goals are:
- To raise the level of the informal education in Yiddish groups to an academic level
- To establish cohesion between different formal and informal bodies that conduct Yiddish activities via developing and implementing joint projects
- To popularize Yiddish culture among students via Klezmer music concerts and various cultural activities
Academics aside, a unique young community has been formed around the Yiddish-Center. Jewish students and young adults have developed an interest in learning Yiddish and willingly participate on Jewish social activities. We are convinced that this interest needs to be nurtured and encouraged.
During the past years we have organized Yiddish shabbatons, which were two day seminars outside Moscow (2000, 2001), monthly Sunday seminars (2003), Yiddish drama studio (2002-2004), Yiddish parties dedicated to Jewish calendar holidays, various courses on Yiddish language, literature, history and culture, Klezmer music workshops and concerts.
Thanks to the support of our generous contributors these programs were a real success.
This year the following programs are available to our students:
- Weekly Yiddish language classes for beginners and intermediate students (approximately 10 students in each group);
- Yiddish language and culture week at a number of universities of Moscow (approximately 100 participants);
- Specialized courses on Yiddish language, culture and history at the Russian State Library (approximately 50 participants).
The last two are brand new projects that are going to be implemented together with Federal Jewish National and Cultural Autonomy, Center for Russian-Jewish Studies, Joint Distribution Committee.
